Please select “Yes” to being a refugee only if you have been formally granted refugee status by the UK government. This means you:
- Have fled your home country due to a well-founded fear of persecution, and
- Have been officially recognised as a refugee and granted leave to remain in the UK.
This does not include people who:
- Are still waiting for a decision on their asylum claim
- Are in the UK under a different immigration status (e.g. student, work, or family visa)
- Have another form of leave (e.g. discretionary leave or humanitarian protection), unless they have since been granted refugee status
You are an asylum seeker if you:
- Have applied for asylum in the UK because you are afraid to return to your home country, and
- Are currently waiting for a decision from the Home Office on your application.
If you have received a decision on your claim, you are no longer classed as an asylum seeker. You may now be a refugee, have humanitarian protection, or another type of leave to remain.
If you're unsure which category applies to you, please get in touch with us before submitting your application.
