Both Pathways Online and STO are online experiences, and there is some overlap between the two, however there are some important differences to be aware of.
1. What do the programmes consist of?
Sutton Trust Online (STO) is a virtual hub with information, advice and guidance on all things university or apprenticeships. the programme is made up of four key phases to support you with your next steps: explore, apply, prepare and succeed. At each phase, you will have access to a range of resources, including:
- Exclusive webinars with leading universities and companies
- OSCAR, an interactive tool with an admissions test and interview modules, along with a personal statement builder software updated for the 2025/26 format.
- Chat with Sutton Trust Alumni.
- Admissions test and interview support.
- The option to apply for a personal statement mentor and A-level tutoring to support you with your application.
Pathways Online is also entirely virtual, but it comes in two distinct streams: Law and Banking & Finance. Throughout the programme, you will participate in a range of online sessions, enabling you to explore what it's like to work in the legal or banking & finance sector, learn about the different routes into the profession, and build your confidence in a range of skills. Sessions can include Q&A panels with employers, university taster lectures, skills workshops and more. There is also the opportunity to take part in a virtual work experience placement with an employer.
In addition, all students on a Sutton Trust programme (including Pathways) will also have access to the content on STO.
2. How does the application process for Pathways Online and STO differ?
All students who apply for any Sutton Trust programme (e.g. Pathways) will automatically be considered for Sutton Trust Online (STO) as well. Pathways Online applications will open on the 2 September 2025. If, instead, you would like to only take part in STO, you can apply directly in 2026.
